Leisure Time Travels' "Capt. Edward Russell Johnston" caught his 59th Ascension Bay permit on a fly during a trip this past April. In twenty-six trips he has caught fseventy-eight permit there and there is a good reason why - Ascension Bay has a unique combination of environmental factors which create the ideal habitat for a myriad of wildlife. The vast estuary/flats ecosystem of Ascension Bay, in conjunction with the surrounding reef, is the basis of this pristine fishery's productivity. Whether you are serious angler or just looking for an enjoyable fishing itinerary, call us! There is no substitute for experience! Along the coast, an intricate chain of submerged islands and little cays provide the ideal habitat for a shallow-water coral ecosystem. The reef itself supplies food and shelter to a huge variety of bait fish and small crustaceans, which in turn attract larger predators.
The flats of Ascension Bay are surrounded by a series of small freshwater springs and creeks which feed the brackish mangrove estuaries. These areas are used as rookeries and feeding grounds for flats and reef species. Ascension Bay's prolific fishery is directly related to its pristine estuary/reef/flats ecosystem. "Team Homosassa" is a "Leisure Time Travel" group of anglers who visit Casa Blanca Lodge every year. In November 1997 our team of anglers re-set (established 1994 & 1996) the Casa Blanca Lodge record for most permit in one week to 30 despite the fact that three days of fishing were hampered by strong northeast winds and a cold front.
