The new Grand Slam Deluxe Fly Fishing Lodge is located on the scenic ocean-side beach of the fishing village of Punta Allen, on the northern edge of Ascension Bay. Sight cast for bones, tarpon and permit in crystalline waters and spend your evenings in luxury.

Situated on one of the most pristine fisheries in the hemisphere, the Grandslam Deluxe Fly Fishing Lodge is located on the northern edge of Ascension Bay, which is located in the middle of the huge acres Sian Ka�an Biosphere Reserve.

The Sian Ka�an (Mayan for �where the sky is born�) is comprised of 1.3+ Million acres along the Caribbean south of Tulum Mexico. It was created in 1986 as a protected wildlife area and designated a World heritage Site in 1987 by UNESCO. The reserve, unique for its geography and wetlands, encompasses low tropical rain forest, coastal savannas, fresh water lagoons, brackish water lagoons, coastal mangrove flats and some 70 miles of coral reefs.

The crystal clear waters of Ascension are a fly fishing paradise. There are miles of shallow bays, secluded mangrove-rimmed lagoons, and white sand beaches. The unique environment is the ideal habitat for a wide variety of animal life and sea life. In essence, it is great home for game fish. Combined, these ingredients are as close to flats fishing paradise you will find anywhere.


Getting to the Lodge is fairly easy. You will fly to Cancun and you will be picked up at the airport or if you arrive a day or two early, at your Hotel. From Cancun your will be driven approximately three hours the Sian Ka�an entrance near Tulum. At that point, depending on road conditions, you either take the jungle road down the Punta Allen Peninsula directly to the lodge or switch to a boat at Ceseak (CESeaK) and enjoy a boat ride to Punta Allen. Either way the total journey takes approximately one hour and is very picturesque and interesting.

As you arrive at the lodge you will notice the Mayan facade of the buildings which is a common construction method of the lower Yucatan Peninsula. The entire well maintained property takes on a unpretentious luxury appearance.

Many of you will instantly recognize your host and Lodge Manager, Bobby Settles. For those of you who don�t know Bobby, he is a very agreeable, enjoyable, humorous, flexible and very capable man. Bobby has been involved in the fishing industry at Ascension Bay for the past twenty years. Bobby knows Ascension Bay and Bobby knows how to accommodate his clients.

Grand Slam Fly Fishing Lodge is comprised of twelve spacious luxury cabanas situated along the beach, the Kai restaurant and Bar, and the Grand Slam office and fly shop. The beautifully-appointed lodge is built of sturdy concrete construction completed with tasteful finishes. All the buildings have an attached Mayan type veranda built of wood poles, planks and thatched roofs.

The lodge has two large back-up (quiet) generators to supplement the town power. The voltage is 110 so you can bring along your normal battery chargers and whatever else you like to plug in.

The quality luxury accommodations are plush with all the niceties you would expect in a fine hotel. All the large rooms have air conditioning, a comfortable bed with comfy pillows and fines linens, tile floors, deluxe bathroom suite with stylish faucets and lavatories set in an handsome granite counter top, a spacious tile shower with built-in shampoo and soap dispenser, ample storage for all your personal belongings, satellite TV (primarily Spanish stations, but some English), CD and DVD players and telephone. All the contemporary rooms have a private alcove with a large whirlpool tub and a sea view.

The main lodge is a circular stone building with a Mayan thatched roof and is comprised of the restaurant and lounge including a fly tying area. The lodge features a modern kitchen and dining facility, and a popular outside beach area with pool. A fully stocked bar has a good selection of premium liquor, red and white wine, beer and sodas. The sea side of the Lodge features a covered wood deck with a pleasing view of the Caribbean Sea. . There is an ample supply of big fluffy cushions where you can relax and enjoy the mesmerizing effect of the changing light and the reflections of the sun on the sea.

Coffee will be waiting for you by six. A traditional breakfast with local flair is made to order and is served at seven. You will make your own picnic lunches from a variety of meats, cheeses and garnishes of your choice. Fruit and cold drinks are taken to the flats in a cooler by your guide. Dinner is served family style and as you can imagine, there is an ample supply of fresh locally caught seafood as well as fresh beef, chicken, vegetables, fruits and delicious desserts. Bottled water is used for drinking.

All fishing excursions utilize clean, 21' custom fiberglass fishing boats and late-model outboard motors. The Panga boats have plenty of storage and a large stable casting platform. While not as fancy as a Dolphin Super Skiff, these boast are well-designed and efficient, and you will certainly admire the value of the craft if the waters becomes rough as they provide a smooth steady ride.

The majority of the time you will embark and disembark directly in front of the Lodge, so loading and unloading is easy. The Lodge also has a dock on the back side of the island less than five minutes away. On days where the wind is an issue you have the option to board your craft there.

Most of the guides are from the local lobster village of Punta Allen and have been on the water most of their lives. Some of the Grand Slam boats have two guides. One senior guide takes care of the poling and scouting and the younger helps to spot the fish. There are a couple of in-house guides who prefer to handle the task by themselves. Either way, you are in good hands.

Upon your return to the Lodge a cool freshwater pool provides a refreshing dip at the end of the day.

EcoTours & Other Activities

Bringing the wife and kids along? There are no significant resort activities and nightlife located here. However, there are several snorkeling trips, birding; kite boarding, sightseeing excursions and private Spanish lessons are offered. The Lodge has available board games, chess, dominos, playing cards, sports balls and snorkeling equipment.

The little village of Punta Allen and the surrounding area is a tropical wilderness located in the heart of the Ka�an Biosphere Reserve. There are numerous Mayan ruins nearby and if you wish to see some of the major Mayan Ruins of the Yucatan, day trips are available.

You can rent (pre-arranged) a SUV or jeep, but you really do not need one if you plan to stay around the Lodge as the town is less than a 5 minute walk. If you wish to take an excursion to one of the interesting areas such as Tulum, Coba, Aktunchen, Xel Ha, Xcaret, Playa del Carmen, Cozumel and Chetumal then it is prudent to hire a driver.

The Lodge also offers currency exchange (dollars work just fine), safety deposit box, telephone service (phones are in your room), wake up calls, internet service and fax service.

It does not take long for your senses to adjust to the solitude and the vast open spaces of Ascension Bay Mexico. The sky so blue and ever clear, layers of clouds moving different speeds, and the crystalline waters carve a backdrop unlike any you have seen.
